Flooding Keeps Fire Department On The Go

Volunteers dispatched to help residents with basement flooding, CO alarms, and a gas emergency over the weekend.

If you noticed an abnormally high volume of fire engine sirens this weekend, you were not imagining it.  The heavy rains late last week, kept the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department busy with 25 calls between Thursday night and Saturday afternoon. That's more than the department saw during the entire month of January. 

Here's a rundown of the activity: 

Thursday, 10:40 p.m.: A water emergency on Aztec Trail; flooding had just started and the utilities were not compromised (yet).

Friday, 2:20 a.m.: A water emergency on Pueblo Drive; a home was surrounded by 2 feet of water. Crews assisted the homeowner with starting his pump and advised him to call back if he had any issues with his utilities.

2:43 a.m.: A water emergency with a boiler popping on Osage Lane; basement flooded with utilities compromised. Crews reported the utilities have been shut down and PSE&G advised.

6:58 a.m.: A water emergency on Lynn Drive. Units responded and reported flooding in the basement but the utilities are still intact. Crews reported a contractor is on location assisting the homeowner with the flooding.

8:01 a.m.: A water emergency on Aztec Trail. Units responded and reported minor flooding with the utilities intact.  Crews reported sump pumps are working properly and the homeowner will be contacting a contractor for assistance.

8:15 a.m.: A water emergency on High Mountain Road.  Units responded and reported a broken sump pump pipe.  Crews fixed the pipe and reported no problem.

9:16 a.m.: A water emergency on Franklin Avenue.  Crews reported 2 feet of water in the basement.  Crews reported the utilities have been shut down and the homeowner was assisted with water removal. 

9:26 a.m.: A water emergency at the Church on Franklin Lake Road. Flooding in the daycare.  Crews assisted with water removal.

9:41 a.m.: A water emergency on Harriet Place. Utilities shut off; PSE&G advised.

10:30 a.m.: A water emergency on Aspen Way; 2 feet of water in the driveway and garage area. Crews assisted with water removal; utilities were not compromised.

11:02 a.m.: A water emergency on Pines Terrace; basement flooding  wit compromised utilities.  Crews shut off the utilities, advised PSE&G and assisted with water removal.

12:45 p.m.: Activated fire alarm; accidental due to contractors.  

12:53 p.m.: Re-dispatched a water emergency on Aspen Way; flooding began again. The utilities were not compromised and the homeowner was advised to contact a contractor.

2:08 p.m.: A water emergency on Butternut Drive. Units responded and reported water impinging on the utilites.  Crews assisted with water removal.

2:58 p.m.: Activated Fire Alarm on Jane Drive; accidental activation due to cooking.  

9:36 p.m. :A water emergency on Ewing Avenue;  heavy flooding in the basement with the utilities compromised. Crews reported the utilites have been shut down and PSE&G notified.  Crews assisted with water removal.

10:19 p.m.: Activated Fire Alarm on Lynn Drive; accidental activation.

Saturday, 6:09 a.m. A water emergency on Crystal Lake Terrace; heavy flooding with the utilities compromised. High readings of CO in the home. Crews shut down utilities, vented the home and assisted with water removal.

7:30 a.m.: Re-dispatched a water emergency at the church on Franklin Lake Road. Units responded and assisted with water removal.

8:59 a.m. A water emergency on Dogwood Trail; heavy flooding in the basement compromising the utilities. Crews shut down the utilities, advised PSE&G and assisted in water removal.

9:07 a.m.: An activated CO alarm on Ginger Lane. Units responded and reported no readings; outdated detectors.

10:39 a.m.: A gas emergency on Dakota Trail; a gas pipe had been cut and the home was full of gas. Command requested Wyckoff and Oakland FD to respond with an Engine.  Crews quickly vented the home as PSE&G arrived on location.   

1 p.m.: A water emergency on Colonial Road; water impinging on the utilities.  Crews assisted with water removal.

2:13 p.m.: A water emergency on Pulis Avenue; water impinging on utilities.  Crews shut off utilites and assisted with water removal.

2:26 p.m.: Homeowner requesting assistance with water surrounding the home. Units responded and reported approximately 2 feet of water surrounding the home.  Crews  assisted with lowering the water enough for the homeowner to get his vehicles out of the garage.
