Firefighters Called to Waldwick Gas Main Break

Service restored to homes off Wyckoff Avenue

UPDATE: Waldwick Fire Chief Walt Riker confirmed that his department responded to West Prospect Street on a call of a gas main break, which occurred when one of the contractors doing drainage work on the block ruptured a line. He said that the fire response was "precautionary" in the event of "exposure problems," but that the situation was quickly brought under control. Riker said that residents on the block were evacuated for about an hour as a precaution, and that the firefighters were off the scene by 11:30 a.m.

Fire department communications indicate that the Wyckoff Fire Department was called to Crescent Avenue and West Prospect Street in Waldwick, a few blocks off Wyckoff Avenue, after 9 a.m. this morning. PSE&G workers at the scene said that a service line to the neighborhood was struck while crews were doing drainage work. However, by noon the crews said service had been restored, and they described the breach as minor. Traffic was flowing and the area was secure, save for West Prospect Street being blocked for the previously scheduled drainage work.

The Waldwick Police Department would not release details relating to the incident, and the Waldwick Fire Department and Department of Public Works could not be immediately reached for comment.
