Driver Arrested, Hospitalized After Hitting Telephone Pole

Franklin Lakes resident charged with DWI, drug possession in connection with Saturday morning accident.

An early morning accident on the Ewing Avenue exit ramp off Route 208 North landed a 27-year-old borough resident in the hospital and in trouble with the law. 

Police allege Michael Defranco, 27, was driving under the influence when he struck a utility pole at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning. He was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center by the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps. His condition was not released to the press. 

According to a statement from the Franklin Lakes Police Department, Defranco faces charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of a controlled dangerous substance suspected to be cocaine and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle.

The exit ramp was closed for several hours on Saturday morning following the accident.
