Truck Levels Utility Pole on Route 208 Causing Massive Traffic Delays

Northbound side of highway was corked at Russell Avenue

A single-car accident brought traffic to a standstill on both sides of Route 208 near Russell Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The northbound side of the highway was completely blocked off at Russell Avenue and drivers were diverted into the township, causing extensive back-ups on Wyckoff Avenue.

"At 1:46pm, a small truck driven by a Pompton Lakes man ran off the roadway northbound between Russell Avenue and Ewing Avenue and struck a utility pole,"  Chief Benjamin Fox said.

There were no injuries as a result of the crash, he added.

Following the crash, the utility pole fell across the northbound lanes with wires dangling into the left-most lane of the southbound side, Fox added.

There were significant traffic delays on Wyckoff Avenue leading into the center of town from all of the exiting highway traffic which was forced to exit at Russell Avenue.

Northbound traffic was reopened at 3:20 p.m., Fox said.

Despite that, traffic was slow returning to normal on the busy highway and commuters can expect residual delays in the area.

Fox said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
