Abbey Road Reenactment, Pedestrian Safety Initiatives Earn Wyckoff AAA Award

The township has received the American Automobile Association's highest award for its efforts to promote traffic and pedestrian safety.

Wyckoff is doing a good job trying to keep pedestrians safe, according to AAA, which recently awarded the township its Award of Excellence for community traffic safety.

According to a release from the township, Wyckoff was one of 10 municipalities in Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties that received the 2013 award, given out annually by the North Jersey branch of the American Automobile Association.

This year marks the eighth out of the past ten that Wyckoff has received the award, the release said.

The township’s award focused on the police department’s efforts to improve pedestrian safety.

In May, members of the PD reenacted The Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover in an effort to promote awareness about pedestrian safety issues. The image coincided with a “Cops in Crosswalks” campaign to help improve safety at Wyckoff intersections.

According to the release, that was just one of many initiatives throughout the year that helped win the AAA recognition. Others included:

  • Safety talks with school aged children and senior citizens, demonstrations by bicycle patrol officers at schools, child safety seat inspections by certified police officers
  • Periodic reviews of crash data to review cause and make possible changes
  • Reviews of school crosswalk locations that led to engineering changes at some to improve visibility and overall safety
  • The installation of traffic delineators at numerous school and high pedestrian crosswalk locations to improve motorist awareness of the requirement to yield to pedestrians
  • Implementing AAA's “Otto the Auto” safety program to young children, annual "Safety Town" demonstration in schools, and numerous other in-school safety campaigns
  • Safe driving information distributed through resident newsletters, public service announcements and e-mail blasts.
  • Releasing Public Service Announcements designed to inform and remind residents of the township's safety rules

In the release, the township said it plans to continue enhancing these and other efforts.

“Wyckoff truly believes in the three ‘E’s’ philosophy in traffic safety – ‘Education, Enforcement and Engineering.’ The Police Department continues to look for new ways to improve safety within the Township utilizing all three principles.”
