29 Arrested in Illegal Sports Betting Ring Bust, Prosecutor Says

29 people were arrested after cops busted an illegal sports betting ring based in Bergen County that authorities say netted $3 million during a 12-month period, County Prosecutor John Molinelli announced in a release Friday.

According to Molinelli, the group is accused of using off-shore wire rooms to collect bets and money from gamblers betting on horse races, football, basketball, hockey, and baseball. During a 12-month period, wagers bet through the off-shore wire room are estimated at $50 million, Molinelli said.

The prosecutor alleges that the operation was run by two men, Gary Latawiec and Anthony Pintabona, of Clifton and Secaucus, and was managed by Patrick Caporizzo and James Roberts of Toms River and Clifton.

The quartet managed a network of “agents” throughout northern New Jersey and New York who would meet with bettors so they could collect winnings or pay out losses, Molinelli said. The agents received a commission for their work, the release said.

Latawiec, 76, and Pintabona, 72, were charged with racketeering, money laundering, promoting gambling, and conspiracy, Molinelli said.

Caporizzo, 65, and Roberts, 62, were charged with conspiracy and promoting gambling, the release said.

The ongoing investigation executed 42 search warrants and so far seized two vehicles and about $800,000, Molinelli said.
