Barnert Temple Mitzvah Mall to Benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims

The temple's 13th Annual Mitzvah Mall will be held on Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.

A family-friendly event this weekend will help raise money for ten organizations chipping in for Hurricane Sandy relief.

Barnert Temple’s thirtheenth annual Mitzvah Mall will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Jan. 13 at the Franklin Lakes temple.

“A catastrophe happened and we are showcasing ten organizations that help meet the needs of people who lost everything: displaced people, the aged, children, the hungry and others in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut,” said Ron Lynn, who has headed the Mitzvah Mall at Barnert for the ten years.

Charities are researched and vetted to assure the quality and integrity of the work that is being done, according to representatives with the temple.

This year’s organizations include: Family to Family, The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Good People Fund, Jewish Association Serving the Aged, Jewish Helping Hands, The Moonachie/Little Ferry Relief Fund, Nechama – Jewish Response to Disaster, NJ Coalition to End Homelessness, Seer Farms and The West End Temple.

Interactive tables are set up and students and the community are invited to learn more about the organizations and donate to the ones of their choice, according to Lynn, who said that over the past ten years Mitzvah Malls have netted on average between $20,000 and $30,000 per year.

The Mitzvah Mall is open to everyone and will be held at the Barnert Temple at 747 Route 208 South, Franklin Lakes. It is recommended that younger children have parental supervision. No RSVP is required. The Men’s Club will also be hosting a pancake breakfast and the Sisterhood will be offering raffle baskets.  For more information, contact the temple office at 201-848-1800.
