Food Donations Needed For Thanksgiving & Hurricane Sandy

Local food pantries struggling to keep up with the demand this holiday season.

For food pantries across Northern New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy dealt a double blow: It increased the number of families in need of assistance and shortened the span between Halloween (which Gov. Chris Christie moved to Nov. 5) and Thankgsiving, which comes early this year.

Prior to the storm, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey reported more than 960,000 residents of Northern New Jersey are food insecure, meaning at times they lack access to enough food to maintain an active, healthy life. 

The Community Food Bank is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9am to 2pm at the following locations in Bergen County:

  • St. Peter the Apostle Church, 431 5th Avenue, River Edge 
  • Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 Palisades Avenue, Bogota 
  • Immaculate Conception Church, 49 Vreeland Ave, Hackensack 
  • United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street, Ridgewood 
  • Teaneck Municipal Building, 818 Teaneck Road, Teaneck 
  • ShopRite, 175 Main Street, Lodi
  • ShopRite, 540 New York Avenue, Lyndhurst 
  • ShopRite, 372 Broadway, Hillsdale
  • ShopRite, 500 South River Street, Hackensack 
  • Kings Food Market, 70 Union Avenue, Cresskill

The Center For Food Action is also collecting food to feed people in our community at the following locations and hours:

  • 192 West Demarest Ave., Englewood 07631, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Tuesdays 9am to 7pm & First Saturday of every month, 10am to 1pm
  • 239 Anderson Ave., Fairview 07022, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am to 5pm
  • 316 First Street, Hackensack 07601, Monday to Thurs 9:30am to 3:30pm, and Fridays 9:30am to 2:30pm
  • 90 Ridge Road, Mahwah 07430 (next to Mahwah Library), Mondays 10am to 6:30pm, Tuesday thru Friday 10am to 2pm & First Saturday of every month 10am to 1pm
  • 1061A Slocum Ave., Ridgefield 0765, Monday and Friday 10am to 4pm
