Public Service Annoucement For Wyckoff Residents: Keep Bulk Items And Household Appliances Out Of The Waste Stream

Information for residents on how to dispose and recycle bulk and household items.

From the Township of Wyckoff:

Keeping appliances out of the waste stream will be a big part of improving Wyckoff’s residential recycling rate to achieve the “Nifty Fifty” goal: a 50% residential recycling rate. In March 2014, Wyckoff was at 37.45%, and our goal is to improve the rate to 50% for the summer months!

Every Wednesday, the Wyckoff Department of Public Works will pick up appliances such as residential room air conditioners, dehumidifiers, residential refrigerators and freezers (with doors removed) and stoves. Residents can simply call 201-891-7000, ext 101 to request curbside collection. These appliances may also be brought to the Recycling/Conservation Center at 476 West Main Street.

A reminder: central air conditioning units are considered construction material and must be disposed of privately. A building permit must be obtained when replacing or installing central air conditioning.

Household appliance/Metal bulk items that can be picked up curbside include:

  • Residential wall-unit air conditioners
  • Residential washer and dryer (removal of doors recommended)
  • Residential stoves and ovens (removal of doors recommended)
  • Residential refrigerators (removal of doors REQUIRED)
  • Metal grills (propane tank must be removed by the homeowner before placing grill at curb)
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Hot water heaters (water removed – light enough to pick up)
  • Metal basketball poles and rims (without cement)

The following items are not considered the usual, daily household garbage items and are considered construction/renovation materials, unusual, over-sized or overweight items. Provisions should be made by the property owner when they are planning a construction project or have an unusual item. These items should be disposed of by the contractor replacing/removing or residents may contract with private trash collectors; consult the Yellow Pages under Rubbish & Garbage Removal for the below listed items:
