About 2,600 graduated at FDU’s 69th commencement held Tuesday at the IZOD Center.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker delivered a rousing speech at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s 69th Commencement Tuesday, telling the more than 2,000 graduates to use their success to inspire others. "When you have reached the pinnacle of success as you defined it, when the world sees you for who you are, don't just stand there and have everybody look at you in awe,” Booker told the crowd at the IZOD Center. “Stand there so that you inspire others to join you as well." The mayor received an honorary doctorate along with New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson and Minnesota Vikings owner and FDU alum Zygmunt “Zygi” Wilf. The students and faculty share their thoughts on what's in store.
The Franklin Avenue Middle School was a buzz of excitement on Thursday night as the graduates of 2011 – all 166 of them – received their diplomas. The class will branch off to Ramapo, Indian Hills, or private schools like Don Bosco and Immaculate Heart Academy. Overall, it was a bittersweet experience for the graduates. “This was a family atmosphere where we could rely on each other for anything and everything,” graduate Joesphine Zinn said. The graduates reflected on how quickly their time at FAMS went. “The past three years have gone by in the blink of an eye,” graduate Michael Park said. “FAMS is an exceptional middle school with so much to offer its students.” Susan Spagnuolo, of the Physical Education department for grades 6-8, said …

2011 Senior Class Graduates
Inside, out of the bad weather, the class of 2011 celebrated their graduation. Parents and graduates crowded into a steaming hot gymnasium with the doors open and a few fans providing some relief from the heat. The graduates were in high spirits, sad it's really over but optimistic about the future.
