Local Jeweler Partnering with School of Dance

Famed Ballerina to Speak at Fundraiser Organized by Devon Fine Jewelry and Wyckoff School of Dance

Devon Fine Jewelry and the Wyckoff School of Dance are coming together to host their first annual fundraiser entitled “Gems of the Dance: Uniting the Arts for a Better World.” The event will be held tonight at 7 PM at the Brick House Restaurant on Godwin Avenue.

“It’s [going to be] a beautiful combination of jewelry art, gem art, and the art of dance,” says Devon owner Nancy Schuring. The evening will showcase all three of those elements in a variety of ways, including shadow boxes of ballet shoes worn by members of the New York City Ballet, a display of premiere Devon Fine Jewelry pieces featuring gems from Madagascar, and a silent auction featuring a rare, custom framed lithograph of ballerina Anna Pavlova.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Devon Foundation Scholarship Fund, which provides Gemology scholarships to gem mining communities around the world so that they can take full advantage of their gem mining resources. The Foundation has awarded eight scholarships since 2008, with its present focus on the Institute of Gemology in Madagascar.

“Gems of the Dance” will feature a performance by students from the Wyckoff School of Dance in a piece that was inspired by legendary Russian choreographer George Balanchine (1904-1983), regarded as the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of modern ballet. The piece, entitled “Gems of the Dance,” inspired the name of the fundraiser itself.

“Gems of the Dance” will also feature a rare appearance by special guest speaker Helene Alexopoulos Warrick, former ballerina with the New York City Ballet which is one of the world’s leading companies. Alexopoulos toured with the Ballet for twenty-four years, retiring in 2002.
