Wyckoff Businesses Awarded for Going Green

Four Wyckoff business met the requirements to be the first four honorees of the Green Business Program.

The Wyckoff Environmental Commissions Green Business Program awarded a certificate to the first four honorees of their program.

Chocolate Etc., Green Lion Digital, 3 Chicas and the Township of Wyckoff were all awarded “handsome certificates” for their efforts in going green.

“Honestly, when I first saw the form and the procedures it really made me think,” said Chocolate Etc. owner Jay Vidockler. “There were some environmental friendly things I was doing and others that I wasn’t even conscious of so I started to do more of them. It’s really easy for any business to do and if everybody in town took these steps it could really make a difference.”

The Green Business Program is part of an initiative to get Wyckoff closer to attaining the Silver level of certification from Sustainable Jersey.

There are just under 400 communities registered as sustainable communities, 102 of which have reached Bronze status, including Wyckoff. Only 11 communities have reached the Silver status and the Gold level is still being structured.

Harriet Shugarman of the Wyckoff Environmental Commission and Township Administrator Bob Shannon were among the presenters and leaders of the Green Business Program.

“Wyckoff has been striving to be as sustainable as possible and I’m told there are only one or two of these programs in the State,” said Shannon. “This is a groundbreaking program. The Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce has always been doing positive things and helping the community. Part of the beauty of this program is that it also teaches a number of smart business practices.”
