Should the Rich Pay More Tax?

Is their burden too low or too high?

Have high taxes driven people out of New Jersey?

That's what Charles Steindel, the treasury department's chief economist said last week. Steindel argued that the exodus of wealthy residents was slowing down the state's economy.

Many executives of New Jersey companies make their homes in Pennsylvania, since the tax law says they pay income tax where they live, not where they work. Some estimate this costs New Jersey's Treasury $50 million a year.

But there are also many people who say the state's richest don't pay their fair share. State Democrats have proposed a tax on those earning more than $1 million, drawing the ire of Gov. Chris Christie.
