Ramapo Fencing Loses to Montclair

Eliminated 12-15 (10-14) in first round of the State Team Championship

The following  Fencing report was submitted by Coach Paul Apostol:

Ramapo fencers were unable to maintain the momentum from their first place finish in the District Championship last Saturday in order to beat a Montclair team that based on past performances should have been a team that Ramapo could beat. However, despite trying with all their might to win their bouts it was not Ramapo’s victory to be had.

The competition got off to an inauspicious start when Ramapo lost one of the first round sabre bouts, an unexpected result.

Ramapo foilists went 1-2 in the first round, but going only 1-2 in epee was also a surprise. After finishing the first round with a 4-5 record, Ramapo went on to produce the same result in the second round…two victories in sabre and one apiece in foil and epee, leaving the score at 8-10.

When the sabre squad went 2-1 again in the third round it looked like Ramapo’s chances had slipped away. Montclair foilists won all three of their third round bouts to clinch the meet at 10-14.

Sabreists Charles Copti, Josh Chang and Alex Gorloff showed flashes of brilliance as they have all season but in a very unusual turn of events all three went 2-1.

Tyler Clarke, the only Ramapo foilist able to hold his own against Montclair, went 2-1, producing the only Ramapo victories in a 2-7 record for the foil squad.

Ramapo epeeists Sam Judd, Scott Zellers, and Michael Daly all went 1-2 to give the squad a 3-6 record. There were several bouts where they needed one touch to win but where they could not come up with a winning strategy.
