Near-Fatal Bout of Malaria Inspires Activism

Wyckoff woman partners with ING Activewear to provide protection against the disease

In April 2010, Pam Abma took a missions trip to Africa with her church. Little did she know, she came home with Malaria. It nearly killed her.

She was taken to the hospital Memorial Day weekend with acute respiratory distress syndrome, put in a medically induced coma, and given lifesaving treatments that aren't available in most parts of the country. While she was "sleeping," her daughter, Joy, went to the prom and graduated high school, and her son, Jimmy, rescheduled his wedding plans.

Knowing her recovery was due solely to technology not available in other parts of the world, Pam and Touch the World Ministries in Allendale have teamed up with ING Activewear to promote an innovative piece of clothing to prevent malaria in third world countries.

Called the Moskeeto Hood-E, it is a lightweight, hooded jacket that repels insects, including mosquitos that carry malaria. The sleeves of the jacket can be shut, the hood can cover the face but still be seen through, and the garment also offers sun protection.

For a $22 donation to Touch the World Ministries, you can purchase a Hood-E to protect an adult or a child in an area where malaria mosquitoes are prevelent.
