Five Bicycle Safety Tips
Here's what you need to know to stay safe while having a good time
With warmer temperatures here, many families are breaking out the bicycles and hitting the road. Here are some tips on staying safe and enjoying the ride.
1. Wear a helmet. It's the law if you are 16 and under and it just makes sense if you are over 16. Studies have shown that lives are saved by simply putting on a helmet before hitting the road. Not sure if your helmet fits properly? Most bike store staffers are knowledgeable and a good resource to be sure your helmet will provide proper protection.
2. Learn hand signals. Riding on local roads? Then you should know proper hand signals to let cars know where you plan to head and if you plan on making a turn. Bergen County is one of the most populous areas in the state and roads can be congested. Stay safe by signaling.
3. Be seen. Sounds simple but this is a key piece of advice. Wear bright clothing so that drivers can see you on the road. If biking at night, which is discourage by most safety experts, be sure to wear reflective clothing and affix lights to your bike.
4. Prevent the theft of your bike. Invest in a good lock (experts recommend a U-lock sold at most bike stores) and be sure to lock it to a bike rack whenever possible. Write down the serial number of your bike and keep it in a safe place--it will help police recover your bike in the event that it is stolen. Police also recommend taking a picture of your bike.
5. Maintain your bike. Accidents can be avoided by maintaining your bike. Check the air in your tires, your brakes, the height of the seat and handlebars and overall comfort. If biking at night, be sure your lights work before heading out the door. Make sure chains are properly oiled and in the right position.
