Christian Health Care Center Employee and Wyckoff Resident Honored

Wyckoff resident Carol Hertenstein, RN, Ramapo Ridge Psychiatric Hospital Utilization Review Director, was recently honored as a Legend Quarterly All Star by Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) in Wyckoff. Staff of CHCC is invited to nominate co-workers as Legends as part of the Center’s service-excellence initiative. A Legend is someone who exemplifies the mission and values of CHCC in an outstanding and easily recognizable manner, who contributes exemplary service for the benefit of those served at CHCC and beyond, or who demonstrates behavior above and beyond expectations. Ms. Magnifico was nominated by more four of her colleagues.

Ms. Hertenstein truly cares about patients, families, co-workers, and the community. Her extensive knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid regulations, as well as managed-care requirements, benefits CHCC and those entrusted to its care. She is an amazing resource who is often sought out for direction, guidance, and answers about the ever-changing world of mental-health care insurance. It is not unusual to see Ms. Hertenstein in the hallway sharing her expertise with staff for the benefit of patients and families. She can often be founding pouring over new rules, regulations, and mandates to ensure that the Center receives full reimbursement for services delivered. Ms. Hertenstein follows all issues to resolution and is quick to intervene and address any and all insurance issues with insurers. This has garnered respect from payors who view her as knowledgeable and fair.

Ms. Hertenstein, who was nominated to serve as President of the Wyckoff Board of Health, also cares deeply about the community. During the October snowstorm, she helped Wyckoff residents get emergency placement while she was out of heat and electricity herself. She never mentioned her own plight; instead she focused entirely on ensuring that those in need found shelter.

The non-profit CHCC has been serving the community since 1911, providing a broad scope of mental-health and elder-care programs.

In March of this year, President Barak Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, officially known as H.R. 3590, or Healthcare Reform. Part of this law will require that by 2014, most Americans must purchase government regulated health insurance. In fact, Section 1501 of the act adds a new chapter to the IRS code that mandates all “applicable” individuals to either obtain health insurance that meets the bill’s “minimum essential coverage” standards. If they do not, they will be required to pay a penalty.

Religious Conscious Exemptions

There are, however, some healthcare bill exemptions. First, the new law creates a religious conscience exemption for those who are members and faithful adherents of a recognized religious sect or division. The provision may exempt those individuals from the mandatory health insurance purchase requirement if they are members of religions that have established tenets or teachings that bar the “acceptance of the benefits of any private or public insurance.”

The religious conscience exemption is defined as:http://www.newsonhealthcare.com/healthcare-bill-exemption/
